Stats Stats Stats

As a wise man (my housemate) once said “statistics can prove anything!” It was mid-heated-argument and the statistics definitely did prove a lot. However, he’s right, statistics can prove anything you want them to if you do the right research. I like ’em anyway though…

Here’s a few stats on writing and the like:

129,864,880 different books have been published in all of modern history.

3,000,000 books are published on Amazon every year.

797,991 new book titles were published this year.

36.2 is the average age of authors selling their debut novel.

64,531 is the average number of words in a book.

71% of the authors earning over $100,000 a year are self published.

3,408,987 blogs were written today (3,408,988 now…)

399,500 writers attempted the NaNoWriMo challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in one month in 2013.

Aaaand 99.9% of writers think their work is terrible but actually it’s not too shabby!

I thought these stats were pretty optimistic but if you don’t feel the same way then I’m sure you can find some different research to dispute it easily enough! ;)

PS. Here’s three mesmerising stat sites to stare at:
